The Nepal Engineering Council (NEC) awards the Professional Engineer title as PEng (NPL). It is not the same as the General Registered Engineer registration that a bachelor’s graduate may pursue. PEng registration is for engineers who meet NEC’s higher academic, experience, professional-development, and assessment requirements.
This guide explains the current requirements and preparation process. It does not announce an application deadline: check the NEC Professional Engineer portal and the NEC website for the current call before paying or submitting anything.
Quick eligibility check
For NEC’s Standard Route, the published applicant guidance lists all of the following:
- General Registered Engineer status with NEC;
- a master’s degree in a relevant engineering subject from an NEC-recognized university;
- seven years of professional experience after receiving that master’s degree;
- at least two years in a responsible position involving significant engineering activities; and
- at least 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in the previous year.
NEC also lists a Registered Route for an applicant with a four-year BE, relevant master’s degree, seven years of relevant post-master’s experience, 30 CPD hours in the previous year, and a professional-engineer title from an internationally competent institution associated with the International Engineering Alliance. The registered route has a document review and interview path; follow NEC’s current instructions for your situation.
If you do not yet meet every requirement, do not treat an older notice or a third-party summary as an exception. Build your experience and CPD record first, then confirm eligibility with NEC when the next call opens.
Standard Route and Registered Route
| Question | Standard Route | Registered Route |
|---|---|---|
| Who is it for? | NEC General Registered Engineers seeking PEng (NPL) | Engineers who already hold an eligible overseas professional-engineer title |
| Core academic requirement | Relevant NEC-recognized master’s degree | Four-year BE and relevant NEC-recognized master’s degree |
| Experience | Seven years after the master’s degree, including two responsible years | Seven years of relevant experience after the master’s degree |
| CPD | At least 30 hours in the previous year | At least 30 hours in the previous year |
| Assessment described by NEC | Competence review, written examination, and interview | Document review and interview as determined by the committee |
The requirements and route decision are made by NEC. Use this comparison to prepare, not as an approval decision.
Prepare before an application call opens
The PEng process rewards a well-organized evidence file. Start early rather than trying to rebuild several years of work at the deadline.
1. Confirm your academic and registration records
Keep certified copies of your master’s or higher-degree qualification, citizenship certificate, NEC General Registered Engineer certificate, and an equivalence certificate if NEC requires one for your qualification. Check that names, dates, registration numbers, and discipline details are consistent across the documents.
2. Document engineering experience
NEC asks for evidence of work experience. Prepare a chronological record that identifies the organisation, project or service, dates, your engineering role, responsibilities, and the work that demonstrates professional competence. Keep employment letters and relevant supporting evidence with the record.
3. Keep a CPD record as you go
NEC asks for CPD documents and requires at least 30 CPD hours in the previous year for both published routes. Retain certificates, programmes, attendance records, presentation details, and other evidence as you complete activities. Do not wait until the application period to reconstruct your record from memory.
4. Speak with a suitable first supporter
The applicant instructions describe two supporters. You select Supporter-1; after NEC confirms eligibility, NEC nominates Supporter-2. The supporters help assess the applicant’s professional competence and provide confidential reports. NEC’s working procedure says they must be engineers who hold the PEng title or qualifying professional membership from an International Professional Engineers Agreement member body.
Ask a potential supporter early, give them enough time to understand your work, and use the current NEC list and instructions to confirm that they are eligible. Do not assume a senior colleague can support an application without checking.
What happens after submission
For the Standard Route, NEC’s published procedure follows this broad sequence:
- You assess your eligibility and prepare the application file.
- NEC performs a preliminary document and eligibility review.
- Eligible applications move to the PE Evaluation Committee.
- Your competence profile and supporting material are reviewed.
- Candidates who meet the required threshold are notified about the written examination.
- Candidates who meet the written-examination threshold attend an interview.
- NEC notifies successful interview candidates about the PEng (NPL) award.
An incomplete or non-conforming file can be returned or rejected. NEC’s process is an assessment, not an automatic upgrade from General Registered Engineer status.
Fees currently listed on the PEng portal
| Item | Amount listed by NEC |
|---|---|
| Application fee | Rs. 3,000 |
| PEng registration fee after passing | Rs. 20,000 |
| Renewal fee | Rs. 10,000 |
| Late-renewal fee | Rs. 5,000 |
The portal says paid fees are non-refundable. Fees and payment instructions can change, so confirm the live amount and payment method in your dashboard before making a payment.
Documents to have ready
The current PEng portal lists these document categories:
- certified academic qualification certificate for a master’s or higher degree;
- certified Nepali citizenship certificate;
- equivalence certificate, if required;
- work-experience documents;
- CPD documents; and
- a certified NEC General Registered Engineer certificate.
NEC’s detailed guidelines also require application and supporter material. Follow the current call and downloadable forms for the exact order, certification, file format, and submission method. Never send personal documents to an unofficial agent or social-media account.
Renewal and ongoing CPD
The NEC working procedure describes a five-year validity period for PEng registration. Treat CPD as an ongoing professional record, not a last-minute renewal task. For NEC’s published renewal-record requirement, evidence checklist, and live-information checks, read NEC PEng Renewal: CPD Record, 150-Hour Requirement and Checklist. Before renewal, check NEC’s current CPD rules, required evidence, fee, timing, and any changes to the portal.

Frequently asked questions
Is PEng the same as NEC General Registered Engineer registration?
No. PEng is a separate professional-engineer title with its own higher academic, experience, CPD, supporter, and assessment requirements. The General Registered Engineer process is covered in the separate NEC registration guide.
Can I apply for PEng immediately after completing a master’s degree?
Not under the published eligibility criteria. NEC lists seven years of professional experience after the master’s degree, along with other route-specific requirements. Confirm the current call before applying.
Who chooses the two PEng supporters?
You select Supporter-1. NEC’s applicant instructions say NEC nominates Supporter-2 after it confirms your eligibility. Confirm the current supporter criteria and forms with NEC before asking someone to support your application.
When is the next PEng application deadline?
This guide does not set a deadline because application calls can change. Check the NEC Professional Engineer portal and current NEC notices for the active schedule before preparing a payment or submission.
