Tribhuvan University (TU) provides an online route for students to request academic documents including a transcript and provisional certificate. Engineering graduates often need these documents when preparing for Nepal Engineering Council (NEC) registration, employment, further study, or an international application.

The process is handled through the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE), Balkhu. Start from the official TU Examination Controller website and follow its current student-portal link. TU’s published manual identifies the student portal as student.tuexam.edu.np and uses the menu option Transcript and Provisional Application.

Transcript and provisional certificate: what is the difference?

These documents are related but they are not the same document.

DocumentWhat it shows or provesCommon use
TranscriptYour consolidated academic record and examination resultsNEC registration, admission, credential evaluation, employment, or further study
Provisional certificateTemporary proof that you completed the qualification while the original certificate is pendingJob applications, admission, licensing, or another deadline before the original certificate is issued
Original/convocation certificateThe formal final certificate issued through TU’s separate processPermanent degree documentation
Migration certificateA separate record for leaving or transferring from one university systemAdmission or transfer to another university, where requested

Ask the organisation requesting your documents which one it needs. Do not assume that a transcript, provisional certificate, original certificate, and migration certificate can substitute for one another.

What engineering graduates usually need for NEC registration

The current NEC General Registration Engineer portal lists a bachelor’s degree transcript and a bachelor’s degree or provisional certificate among the required notarized documents. It also lists an equivalence certificate for foreign-study candidates, if applicable.

For a TU-affiliated engineering graduate, prepare the transcript and provisional certificate before starting the NEC application if the documents are available. Keep the documents’ names, dates, registration number, and programme details consistent with the information you enter in the NEC form.

If you studied engineering outside Nepal, a provisional certificate or transcript does not by itself settle the equivalence requirement. Confirm the current equivalence route with the organisation requesting it. TU CDC has transferred higher-education equivalence work to UGC; see the current TU/UGC equivalence guide.

Documents and information to prepare

Before opening the portal, keep clear copies and the exact details from your TU records ready:

  • TU registration card or registration number;
  • marksheets for every year or semester, including passed back papers where applicable;
  • programme, faculty, level, campus, and examination details;
  • exam year, part or semester, roll number, and examination type for each attempt;
  • an email address you can access for the student-portal account;
  • a phone number if the current portal requests one;
  • a clear scan or photograph of documents in the file format and size accepted by the portal; and
  • a payment method supported by the current TU payment screen.

The official online application manual says that applicants must enter exam details for every exam they have attempted. Do not enter only the final year if the form asks for all parts or semesters.

For an engineering programme, compare the entry you make with your registration card and marksheets. Use the official programme name and the correct academic year rather than a shortened name copied from a social-media post.

How to apply for a TU transcript and provisional certificate online

1. Open the official Examination Controller website

Go to the TU Office of the Controller of Examinations website. Use the student-portal link published there instead of relying on an old bookmark or a third-party service that asks for your TU credentials.

TU’s published manual directs students to student.tuexam.edu.np. If the OCE website displays a different current portal address, follow the OCE website and the current login page. Do not enter your password or upload marksheets into an unofficial lookalike website.

2. Create an account or sign in

If you already have an account, sign in with your student-portal credentials. If you are new to the service, use Sign Up and complete the registration fields, including the captcha.

The official manual says that TU sends a username and temporary password to the email address used during registration. On the first login, change the temporary password, then sign in again to reach the student dashboard.

Use an email address you can access. Check the spam or junk folder if the account email does not appear immediately, and do not create multiple accounts before checking whether the first registration succeeded.

3. Open “Transcript and Provisional Application”

From the student dashboard, open the left-side menu and select Transcript and Provisional Application. The wording may be adjusted in a future portal version, but the official manual uses this label.

Select your faculty, level, and programme. If your engineering programme or campus does not appear, do not select a similar programme simply to continue. Save a screenshot of the issue and contact the OCE or your campus examination section for the correct route.

4. Enter the exam details for every attempt

Complete the exam-detail form and use Add Exam Details after each entry. The manual says that the entered details appear in a summary table and that every attempted exam should be included.

Review each row against your records:

  • academic year;
  • year, part, or semester;
  • roll number;
  • name and registration number;
  • regular, partial, chance, or other examination type shown by your record; and
  • any optional remarks that help explain the entry.

If you find an error before payment, use the table’s Edit action. TU’s manual describes an old-detail and corrected-detail field followed by an Update action. Correct the information before submitting the payment request.

5. Choose the bank and submit the application details

After entering the exam details, go to the bank-details section. Select the bank shown by the current portal and submit the bank information before starting payment.

The available bank and payment choices may change. Follow the current portal rather than copying a bank name or fee from an older video.

6. Pay through the displayed payment flow

Click Pay Fee and confirm the payment request. TU’s published manual describes a payment window using ConnectIPS. The current portal may add or change payment options, so check the payment screen before authorising a transaction.

Save the payment reference, receipt, and application ID. If money is deducted but the portal does not update, do not immediately submit a second payment. Check the payment status and contact the responsible TU office or payment provider using official contact information.

7. Print and follow the submission instruction

The official manual states that, after successful payment, the student must print the application form and submit it to the Office of the Controller of Examinations, Tribhuvan University.

This is an important detail: an online form and online payment do not automatically prove that every later verification or collection step is complete. Before travelling, check the latest OCE notice or the instruction displayed in your application account for the receiving office, required originals, and collection method.

8. Collect or follow the current delivery instruction

Keep the printed form, payment proof, application ID, registration card, and original records available when the OCE asks for verification or collection. The office’s current instruction controls whether your document is collected at Balkhu, a regional office, a campus, or another designated location.

Do not rely on an old fixed processing-time promise. Processing can depend on faculty, programme, record verification, corrections, backlog, and whether the request is for a transcript, provisional certificate, or both.

TU transcript and provisional certificate fees

Fees should be confirmed in the current OCE portal and official FAQ before payment. The OCE FAQ has listed Rs. 350 for Bachelor’s/PGD transcript service and Rs. 550 for Master’s/MPhil transcript service. A combined transcript/provisional request or a changed portal service may show a different total or separate charge.

Do not use a fee from an old YouTube video, college notice, or document-service provider as the current TU fee. Save the fee screen and official payment receipt for your records.

What if your engineering programme is missing from the portal?

This is a situation where guessing can create a record problem. Engineering programmes may be administered differently from the general four-year programmes shown in examples of the online form.

If your programme, faculty, campus, or exam structure is unavailable:

  1. Do not choose an unrelated programme.
  2. Check the OCE website for a current notice or help-desk instruction.
  3. Ask your campus examination section whether your record has been released for transcript processing.
  4. Keep a screenshot of the portal message and your registration details.
  5. Contact TU through an official address or number, not a personal account asking for payment or documents.

This is especially important when an NEC application deadline is close. A portal error is not evidence that your qualification is invalid, and submitting incorrect exam details can delay correction.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering only the final semester instead of every exam attempt requested by TU.
  • Using a nickname or different spelling from the registration card.
  • Selecting a similar programme when the correct engineering programme is not listed.
  • Paying before checking the faculty, level, programme, and exam-detail summary.
  • Assuming the payment receipt means the application has been accepted.
  • Forgetting to print or save the paid application form.
  • Travelling to Balkhu based on an old room number or collection date.
  • Uploading marksheets or citizenship documents to an unofficial service without understanding its privacy and handling practices.
  • Submitting the same document to NEC before checking that the name, registration number, and programme match.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a TU transcript and provisional certificate online?

TU’s Office of the Controller of Examinations publishes an online student-portal process for transcript and provisional applications. Start from the official OCE website and follow its current portal and submission instructions.

What documents are needed for a TU transcript?

Prepare your TU registration details and the marksheets and exam information for every year or semester requested by the portal. The exact upload, file-size, and identity requirements can change, so follow the current form.

Do engineering graduates need a provisional certificate for NEC registration?

The current NEC registration portal lists a bachelor’s degree or provisional certificate among its required documents, along with the bachelor’s transcript. Confirm the live NEC checklist for your application and keep the document details consistent.

Is a TU transcript the same as a provisional certificate?

No. A transcript records your academic results. A provisional certificate temporarily proves completion of the qualification while the original certificate is pending. An organisation may ask for one or both.

Does online payment mean I do not need to visit TU?

Not necessarily. TU’s published manual says to print the paid application and submit it to the Office of the Controller of Examinations. Check the latest OCE instruction for verification, submission, and collection before travelling.
