The Institute of Engineering (IOE) BE/B.Arch entrance examination is the computer-based admission test used for undergraduate engineering and architecture programmes under Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Engineering. It is a common entrance route for eligible applicants, but the application dates, fee, exam rules, and available programmes can change each academic year.
For the latest cycle reviewed for this guide, IOE’s official pages list the academic year 2083/084 entrance notice, a revised notice, an updated syllabus, and the BE/B.Arch booklet. Use the latest notice on the official IOE notices page before submitting a form or paying a fee.

Who can apply for the IOE entrance exam?
Under the 2083/084 notice, applicants may apply if they have completed, or are completing an accepted equivalent of, the following route:
- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Grades 11 and 12, or the equivalent subjects in an accepted qualification;
- a Proficiency Certificate Level, Higher Secondary, A Level, engineering diploma, or equivalent qualification accepted by IOE; and
- at least 45% of the total marks, or, for NEB applicants, at least a C grade in the final grade of each specified subject.
The notice also allows students who have appeared in the Grade 12 or equivalent final examination, or in the sixth-semester engineering diploma examination, to participate in the entrance examination. Admission and document verification still depend on satisfying the final requirements in the current IOE notice and booklet.
Foreign citizens have a separate route described in the notice and may apply only for full-fee programmes. If you are applying as a foreign citizen, read the current foreign-applicant notice rather than assuming the regular applicant process applies.
Which programmes and campuses are included?
The 2083/084 notice lists B.E. and B.Arch. programmes such as:
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Architecture
- Electrical Engineering
- Agricultural Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
- Electronics, Communication and Information Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Aerospace Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Geomatics Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
The notice identifies IOE constituent campuses including Pulchowk Campus, Thapathali Campus, Purwanchal Campus, Western Regional Campus, and Chitwan Engineering Campus. It also lists affiliated colleges and programme-specific admission arrangements.
Do not assume that every programme is available at every campus. The entrance result and the later campus/programme admission notice are separate parts of the process. Check the current IOE BE/B.Arch booklet and admission instructions before choosing preferences.
How to fill out the IOE entrance form
The form is completed online through the IOE entrance website. The following sequence is based on the 2083/084 official notice.
1. Read the current notice and booklet first
Start with the latest IOE notice, revised notice, and official downloads page. Confirm the eligibility rule, application opening and closing times, payment method, exam locations, and any special-category documents before creating a plan.
2. Prepare your personal and academic details
The notice asks applicants to enter information such as:
- the applicant’s name and parents’ names;
- date of birth and permanent address;
- SLC/SEE and Grade 11–12, A Level, or engineering-diploma result details; and
- the identifying information for the document used during the application.
Use the spelling and date shown on your official records. A mismatch can create problems when the application, admit card, and identity document are checked.
3. Prepare the photograph and identity document
For the 2083/084 form, IOE specified a recent colour digital photograph with a plain background and a 350 × 300 pixel size. The notice also required an upload of a digital copy of an identity document containing the applicant’s photograph and signature, such as citizenship, national identity card, driving licence, passport, or an applicable academic admit card.
Check the next notice for updated image dimensions and accepted documents. Do not upload an unclear image or a document that belongs to someone else.
4. Pay the entrance fee through an accepted method
The 2083/084 notice listed an entrance fee of NPR 2,500. It described payment through a Siddhartha Bank voucher or supported digital payment routes, including ConnectIPS, eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay, and BankSmart, with any applicable service charge handled under the provider’s rules.
Keep the bank voucher number or transaction ID. The form requires the payment reference, and a payment screenshot is not a substitute for entering the correct transaction information.
5. Submit the form before the deadline
Complete the online form within the opening and closing time shown in the current notice. For 2083/084, the notice gave a form window from 2083/03/03 at 10:00 a.m. to 2083/03/17 at 5:00 p.m., with the fee due by 3:00 p.m. on the closing date.
Those dates are historical cycle information. The form will close automatically after the current deadline, so do not wait for the final afternoon if your payment or document upload still needs troubleshooting.
6. Save the acknowledgement page
After submitting the form, print or save the acknowledgement page. Check that your selected exam date, location, and shift are shown correctly. IOE states that seats for each date, place, and shift are limited and that a confirmed selection may not be changed.
7. Download the admit card and bring the correct ID
The notice says the admit card becomes available online according to the published schedule. Download and print it in colour if the current instruction requires that format. Bring the original identity document associated with the uploaded document and the admit card to the examination centre.
IOE entrance exam pattern and negative marking
The 2083/084 notice describes a two-hour computer-based test with 100 objective questions for 100 marks. The questions cover Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English. It also states that 5% of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for an incorrect answer.
This means guessing has a cost. Before selecting an answer, read the current instructions on the examination screen carefully. Do not carry forward a question pattern from an older year that used different marks, sections, or deduction rules.
IOE entrance syllabus
IOE publishes the syllabus through its own website. The official downloads page currently lists both the Detail Syllabus of B.E./B.Arch. Entrance Examination-2083 and an Updated Detail Syllabus of B.E./B.Arch. Entrance Examination-2083.
Use the updated document as the starting point and check whether a newer notice has replaced it. The syllabus is organised around:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- English
The practical way to use the syllabus is to turn each subject heading into a checklist. Mark topics as “not started,” “understood but slow,” or “reliable under time pressure.” This exposes weak areas more clearly than collecting another large set of notes.
A realistic IOE entrance preparation plan
First pass: understand the full syllabus
Read the current official syllabus once and list every topic. Do not spend the first weeks solving only the subjects you already enjoy. A strong entrance score depends on avoiding preventable losses across all four subjects.
Second pass: rebuild the basics
Review the formulas, definitions, standard reactions, grammar rules, and common question types needed for the syllabus. Keep a short error notebook. Each entry should record the concept you missed and the reason: forgotten rule, calculation error, misread question, or time pressure.
Third pass: practise in the computer-based format
Use timed multiple-choice practice on a computer, not only handwritten exercises. Practise moving past a difficult question, returning when appropriate, and checking your answer before submission. A paper set can help with concepts, but it does not fully reproduce the pace and interface of a CBT exam.
Final phase: revise errors and exam instructions
In the final week, prioritise your error notebook, formula review, official instructions, admit card, ID document, exam location, and reporting time. Avoid replacing a verified syllabus with an unverified “most important questions” list at the last minute.
Common IOE entrance mistakes
- Using an old fee, deadline, syllabus, or negative-marking rule without checking the latest notice.
- Entering a name or date of birth that differs from the identity document.
- Uploading a photograph with the wrong dimensions or an unclear identity document.
- Paying the fee but forgetting to enter the transaction ID in the form.
- Failing to save the acknowledgement page after submission.
- Assuming the entrance result alone completes campus or programme admission.
- Treating a coaching institute’s model paper as an official IOE past paper or syllabus.
- Spending all preparation time on one subject and leaving English or basic topics unpractised.
