The Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Scheme (MGSS) is for eligible Nepali students who are studying in Class 11 in Nepal. It is not a scholarship for study in India, and it is not the same as the Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme (GJSS) for undergraduate study.

For the current 2026–27 cycle, the Embassy of India, Kathmandu says applications are open through the official GOI Scholarship Portal until November 15, 2026, at 23:59. The portal is scheduled to close at 00:00 on November 16, 2026. Read the current Embassy notice before applying because dates, documents, and conditions can change in the next cycle.

What MGSS is — and who it is for

MGSS is a scholarship route for Nepali students who continue their education in Nepal after Class 10. The Embassy’s 2026–27 notice identifies it as the Class 11 scheme and states that selected students receive NPR 24,000 per year for Class 11 and Class 12, subject to the continuation requirements in that notice.

This distinction matters because the Embassy also runs other scholarship programmes. A student looking for a bachelor’s scholarship should check whether GJSS or another current scheme is relevant instead of submitting an MGSS application for the wrong study level.

MGSS or GJSS? Choose the right scheme first

If you are…Start with…
A regular Class 11 student in NepalMGSS
A first-year undergraduate student in NepalGJSS, not MGSS
Looking for a course in IndiaA different Embassy or ICCR scholarship route; do not assume MGSS applies

The MGSS/GJSS notice combines both schemes, so read the MGSS column and the exact headings carefully. The Embassy’s scholarship overview also describes MGSS as funding Class XI and XII study in Nepal.

Check your eligibility against the active notice

For the 2026–27 call, the Embassy notice says an MGSS applicant must be a regular Class 11 student at a recognised educational institution in Nepal, not a diploma student. It also states that the applicant must have at least 60% aggregate marks in Class 10, be a Nepali citizen, have family income below NPR 200,000 per year, and not be receiving a scholarship from another source. Read the official notice in full before deciding that you qualify.

Do not treat this as an eligibility decision from Engineer From Nepal. The Embassy can change its conditions, ask for additional proof, or interpret a record differently from what you expect.

If your Class 10 marksheet shows GPA or grades

The current notice uses a percentage threshold. Do not create your own GPA-to-percentage conversion or rely on a social-media formula. Keep your original marksheet ready and ask the Embassy through the current official contact route if you need clarification.

The SEE grading system explains general grading terminology, but it does not determine whether an MGSS applicant meets the Embassy’s current requirement.

Prepare the documents in the current notice

The 2026–27 notice asks applicants to upload supporting documents. Before opening the form, collect clear, readable copies of the documents the active notice lists, including:

  • A recent passport-size colour photograph
  • Class 10 marksheet
  • A certificate from the principal or head of the institution confirming that you are studying in Class 11 and are not receiving another scholarship
  • Citizenship evidence as specified in the notice
  • A current income certificate from the relevant Government of Nepal authority
  • Disability certificate, where applicable

Use the notice’s wording for the exact issuing authority and document requirements. Do not assume an older notice’s notarisation, translation, file-size, or file-format instruction still applies.

A practical document check before you submit

  1. Compare your name, date of birth, and marks with your official records.
  2. Ask the school for the required Class 11 and no-other-scholarship certificate early; do not leave it for the final day.
  3. Make sure scans are readable and complete before uploading.
  4. Use your own email address and keep access to it. The Embassy says scholarship communication is sent through the email registered in the application.
  5. Read the active notice again immediately before final submission.

Use the official application portal carefully

Start at the GOI Scholarship Portal. The live page provides login and registration options for the 2026–27 MGSS/GJSS application cycle.

Use only the current portal and instructions shown there. Do not give your documents, password, or payment details to a consultant, social-media account, or unofficial website. The Embassy’s notice says it accepts applications directly and warns applicants against middlemen and agencies.

Before final submission:

  • Read the on-screen instructions for the current cycle.
  • Check your spelling, marks, phone number, email address, and uploaded documents.
  • Confirm you selected MGSS, not GJSS.
  • Save the acknowledgement receipt after final submission.

The Embassy’s FAQ says changes are not allowed after final submission. Take time to review every entry rather than assuming you can correct it later. Embassy scholarship FAQ

Avoid common MGSS application mistakes

  • Applying for MGSS when you are in a diploma programme or in undergraduate study.
  • Confusing MGSS with GJSS because both appear in the same notice and portal.
  • Using a date, deadline, document list, or contact address copied from an older cycle.
  • Uploading an unclear scan or a school certificate that does not address the current notice’s request.
  • Guessing how GPA converts to the percentage requirement.
  • Paying or sharing login details with an unofficial intermediary.
  • Leaving final submission until the last few minutes, when a slow connection or unreadable upload can create a problem.

What happens after you apply?

The Embassy’s general FAQ says selected scholarship candidates are informed by email and that scholarship-result announcements are posted through its Education Wing updates. Use the email address you entered in the application and check the official result notices, not an unofficial result list.

For MGSS, the 2026–27 notice says continuation into Class 12 depends on submitting the required Class 11 marksheet and a principal- or head-of-institution-certified status document. Do not assume that selection automatically removes every later document requirement; follow the instructions sent by the Embassy for your award year.

Frequently asked questions

Who can apply for the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Scheme in Nepal?

For the 2026–27 call, the Embassy notice identifies regular Class 11 students in recognised institutions in Nepal as the MGSS audience and excludes diploma students. Check the active notice for every eligibility condition before applying.

What is the MGSS deadline for 2026–27?

The current notice gives November 15, 2026, at 23:59 as the final submission time and says the portal closes at 00:00 on November 16. Check the official notice and portal again before submitting because a notice can be revised.

Can I apply for MGSS if I am already receiving another scholarship?

The 2026–27 notice says applicants receiving a scholarship from another source are not eligible. If your support arrangement is unclear, ask the Embassy through its current official contact route instead of making an assumption in the form.

Can I change my MGSS application after final submission?

The Embassy’s FAQ says no changes are allowed after final submission. Review every field and keep the acknowledgement receipt before you close the form.

My marksheet uses GPA. Should I convert it to a percentage?

Do not use an unofficial conversion formula. The active notice uses a percentage condition, so keep your original marksheet and seek clarification from the Embassy through the current official contact route if you need it.

How will I know if I am selected?

The Embassy says selected candidates are informed by email and that result announcements are published through its official Education Wing updates. Check the email address registered in your application and the official result-notice page.
